10 Jan Keystone Mission’s January 2023 Devotional
The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to start over or try something different. New Year’s resolutions are a tradition in my home. We make goals for ourselves to carry out whether it is losing weight, saving money, or learning a new skill. However, without an execution plan or proper accountability, our goals are simply good intentions.
The book of Ruth quickly introduces us to the tragedy of Naomi’s family. Naomi loses both her husband and sons after moving to a new land called Moab (Ruth 1:3-4). She is now one of three childless widows with her two daughters-in-law, Orpah and Ruth. The three of them were injected into a desperate situation, now in a disadvantaged class and without the support of a family.
Upon hearing all God was doing for His people in Israel, the decision was made clear to Naomi. She would start over by returning home and giving Orpah and Ruth a way out. “‘Go back, each of you, to your mother’s home…May the Lord grant that each of you will find rest in the home of another husband’” (v. 8-9). Orpah wept and kissed Naomi goodbye, “but Ruth clung to her” (v. 14).
Ruth noticed Naomi’s relationship with God and wanted what she had! Ruth decided to step out in faith and dedicate herself to staying by Naomi’s side. She committed to leaving behind all she knew for something different – a new God, a new town, and a new lifestyle. This decision was just the beginning of Ruth’s story.
Similar to Naomi, our guests come from desperate situations. They desire to start over, but their good intentions often need a helping hand to execute positive change. They need a Ruth who will stick beside them during the struggle.
Dave came from a situation where he lacked community but was given the chance to serve, interact with new people, and find a new purpose through the Pathfinders program. Today, you can find him at the Mission with great joy as he volunteers to serve those who have served him.
Thank you for entering another year with Keystone Mission. Now as we look at a fresh calendar year, endless possibilities and opportunities write themselves into every blank space. I am overcome with anticipation of what is up ahead.
